About Historical Museum Basel (Barfüsserkirche)
Medieval Franciscan church (around 1290) converted into Basel's primary history museum, housing treasures from Basel Cathedral, medieval tapestries, and a famous collection of historic artworks.
The Historical Museum Basel is housed in the Barfüsserkirche, the Church of the Barefoot Friars, one of the best-preserved Gothic mendicant churches in Central Europe, built by the Franciscans around 1290 to replace an earlier church of 1256. The church itself is the most important exhibit: the long nave, the elegant Gothic choir, and the beautiful 14th-century architecture create a magnificent setting for the museum's collections. The principal treasures are the liturgical objects and decorative arts saved from Basel Minster during the Protestant Reformation of 1529, when Basel's churches were stripped of their Catholic furnishings, much of the finest material was preserved in civic ownership rather than destroyed. This means the museum contains extraordinary Medieval goldsmith work, embroideries, vestments, reliquaries, and devotional objects that would otherwise have been lost. The collection also includes medieval tapestries of exceptional quality, Gothic sculptures, and one of the finest collections of Basel faience in existence. The museum presents Basel's history from Roman times to the modern era, with particular depth in the medieval and Reformation periods.
Did you know? When Basel adopted the Protestant Reformation in 1529, the city's Catholic church furnishings were not destroyed but transferred to civic ownership, the Historical Museum is the treasure house of that preserved collection.
