About Spalentor

The most beautiful of Basel's three surviving medieval city gates, built around 1400 with its original portcullis still intact and magnificent Gothic carved decoration.

The Spalentor is the finest and most celebrated of the three medieval city gates that still survive from Basel's original ring of fortifications. Built around 1400, it guarded the main western road into the city, the route connecting Basel to the Jura, Alsace, and France beyond. The gate is a masterwork of late Gothic defensive architecture: a massive central tower flanked by two slender circular turrets, all built in the warm local sandstone, with the original portcullis groove still visible. What makes the Spalentor exceptional beyond its defensive function is the quality of its carved Gothic decoration: the sculptural ornament on the turrets and archway includes heraldic devices, foliage, figures, and architectural detail of remarkable refinement for what is essentially a military structure. This integration of aesthetic quality with defensive function is characteristic of the late medieval period, when city gates were understood as statements of civic pride and prosperity as much as instruments of control. Three heraldic coats of arms, Basel, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Bishop of Basel, adorn the gate's inner face. Today the Spalentor stands in the middle of the tram network at the edge of the old town, a daily presence in the lives of Basel residents.

Did you know? The Spalentor was built around 1400 and still has its original portcullis groove, the slot in the stone where the iron grate would be lowered to seal the gate in an emergency.
