About Scuola Grande di San Rocco
A treasure house of 60 monumental Tintoretto canvases covering every wall and ceiling, painted over 23 years, described by Ruskin as one of the three finest buildings in Italy.
The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is a Renaissance confraternity building adjacent to the Frari church in San Polo, containing the most complete and concentrated ensemble of paintings by Jacopo Tintoretto in the world. The building consists of the ground floor Sala dell'Albergo, the Upper Hall (Sala Capitolare), and the ground floor Hall, all of whose walls and ceilings are entirely covered with Tintoretto's monumental canvases.
In 1564, the Scuola held a competition for the decoration of its ceiling. Instead of submitting a sketch like the other competitors, Tintoretto secretly measured the ceiling, painted a full-size oval painting of Saint Roch in Glory, and had it installed in the ceiling on the day of the competition. The Scuola was so astonished that they gave him the commission, and eventually kept him on a retainer for the next 23 years.
The resulting cycle of 60 canvases, depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments, the life of the Virgin, and the life of St Roch, is Tintoretto's life work. The Crucifixion in the Sala dell'Albergo, painted in 1565, is considered his masterpiece. Ruskin called the Scuola one of the three finest buildings in Italy.
Did you know? Tintoretto won the Scuola commission by secretly painting a full-size canvas and installing it in the ceiling on competition day, rather than submitting a sketch like all other competitors.
