About Peggy Guggenheim Collection
American heiress Peggy Guggenheim's Grand Canal palazzo houses one of Europe's finest modern art collections, with Dalí, Picasso, Pollock, Kandinsky, and Giacometti's sculptures on the waterfront terrace.
The Peggy Guggenheim Collection occupies the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the south bank of the Grand Canal in Dorsoduro. The palazzo, unusually low for Venice, earning it the nickname Palazzo Nonfinito (unfinished palace), was purchased by American art collector Peggy Guggenheim in 1949 and became her home until her death in 1979.
Guggenheim (1898–1979) was one of the great art patrons of the 20th century, champion of Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, personal friend of Picasso, Braque, Dalí, Duchamp, and Ernst (whom she briefly married). Her collection of approximately 200 paintings and sculptures represents a remarkably personal survey of the avant-garde from Cubism to Abstract Expressionism.
Highlights include works by Picasso, Braque, Léger, Mondrian, Kandinsky, Dalí, Miró, Pollock, de Kooning, and Rothko. The waterfront terrace features bronze sculptures by Giacometti, and Marino Marini's equestrian Angel of the Citadel faces the Grand Canal with provocatively extended arms.
Did you know? Peggy Guggenheim decided to buy one work of art per day in 1939 as war approached, amassing a collection that now forms the core of one of Europe's finest modern art museums.
