About Grand Canal
Venice's magnificent main waterway stretches 3.8 km in a reverse S-curve through the heart of the city, lined by over 200 palaces from the 13th to 18th centuries.
The Grand Canal, Canal Grande, is the principal waterway of Venice, an inverted S-shaped channel stretching 3.8 kilometres from the Santa Lucia railway station at its northwest end to the Basin of St Mark's at its southeast end. The canal averages 50 metres in width and 5 metres in depth, and it divides the city of Venice into two halves.
Alongside its banks stand some of the finest Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque palaces in the world, over 200 in total, constructed by Venice's most powerful merchant families as statements of wealth and prestige over five centuries. Names such as Ca' d'Oro, Ca' Rezzonico, Ca' Foscari, and the Palazzo Grassi represent the glittering architectural heritage of the Republic.
The canal is served by the vaporetto water-bus system, with Route 1 making slow stops at every landing along its length, considered by many travellers the finest twenty-minute journey in Europe. Three bridges span the canal: the Rialto, the Accademia, and the Scalzi (near the station). A fourth, the modern Calatrava Bridge (Ponte della Costituzione), was added in 2008.
Did you know? The Grand Canal has over 200 palaces along its banks, built by Venice's richest merchant families between the 13th and 18th centuries as visible declarations of wealth.
