About Rialto Market
Venice's legendary open-air market operating since 1097, offering the freshest Adriatic seafood, lagoon fish, and seasonal produce in a setting of medieval loggia and canal-side activity.
The Rialto Market has been the food supply hub of Venice since at least 1097, occupying the north bank of the Grand Canal just west of the Rialto Bridge in two distinct areas: the Pescheria (fish market) and the Erberia (fruit and vegetable market).
The Pescheria building dates from 1907, built in a Neo-Gothic style to complement the surrounding medieval loggia, but fish selling here is ancient. The catch arrives by boat each morning from the Adriatic and the lagoon, and by 7 or 8 am the stalls are stacked with whole fish, clams, mussels, crabs, shrimp, squid, cuttlefish, and the bony lagoon fish used in Venetian cooking. By noon, the market is winding down.
The Erberia operates alongside, laden with seasonal produce from the mainland and the lagoon islands, including the famous radicchio di Treviso and artichokes from Sant'Erasmo island. The combination of the Gothic stone loggia, the canal barges unloading at the water's edge, and the vibrant morning trade creates a scene that has changed little in centuries.
Did you know? The Rialto market has been continuously operating since 1097, making it one of the oldest food markets in Europe, predating most European cities' central markets by centuries.
