About Ca' d'Oro
The 'House of Gold', the finest Gothic palace on the Grand Canal, built in the 1420s-1430s with a gilded facade, now housing the Franchetti Gallery of sculpture and painting.
The Ca' d'Oro, the House of Gold, is considered the finest example of Venetian Gothic palace architecture on the Grand Canal. Built between 1421 and 1440 by the Contarini family, it takes its name from the gilded, azure, and vermilion colours that originally decorated its elaborate Gothic facade, of which traces survive in the carved stonework.
The facade is an extraordinary composition of pointed Gothic arches, trefoil arcading, and intricately carved stone tracery that seems almost impossibly delicate for a building this scale. The asymmetrical design, with a large loggia on one side and solid wall on the other, is characteristic of Venetian Gothic palace architecture, balancing decorative display with practical living space.
The palace was donated to the Italian state in 1916 by its last private owner and now houses the Galleria Giorgio Franchetti, with collections of medieval and Renaissance sculpture, bronzes, tapestries, and paintings including Mantegna's St Sebastian, a fragment of a larger work, and Titian's Venus at the Mirror.
Did you know? The Ca' d'Oro's facade was originally gilded and painted in blue and red, the 'gold' in its name refers to this lost polychrome decoration, not to any natural stone colour.
