About Burano Island

A 45-minute ferry ride from Venice, Burano enchants with its brightly painted fishermen's houses in every colour of the rainbow and its centuries-old tradition of fine needle lacemaking.

Burano is a small island in the northern Venetian lagoon, about 7 kilometres from Venice, reached by ferry from the Fondamente Nove stop. The island is famous for two things: its startlingly colourful houses, painted in every shade of yellow, pink, red, blue, and green, their reflections mirrored in the narrow canals; and its tradition of handmade needle lace, one of the most painstaking and delicate crafts in Italian tradition.

The origins of the house-painting tradition are debated, one account holds that fishermen painted their houses in distinct colours so they could identify their home from the water when returning in fog. What is certain is that today the colours are closely regulated by the local authority, which must approve any change of colour.

Burano lace, merletto di Burano, is among the finest needlepoint lace in the world, made by making thousands of individual buttonhole stitches with a single thread and needle. At its height in the 17th century, Burano lace was worn by European royalty and nobility. The Museo del Merletto (Lace Museum) preserves historic examples and still features elderly women demonstrating the craft.

Did you know? Burano homeowners cannot freely choose their house colour, they must apply to the local authority, which consults a list of approved colours for each specific building.
