About Cannaregio District

Venice's most authentic neighbourhood, home to the world's first Jewish Ghetto (1516), the grand Strada Nova shopping street, and canals largely free of tourist crowds.

Cannaregio is the northernmost of Venice's six sestieri (districts), stretching from the railway station to the eastern edge of the city. It is the most densely populated district and the one where Venetians most retain a sense of their own neighbourhood identity, with local shops, bacari (wine bars), and a working-class character that the more touristic districts have lost.

The Strada Nova, widened by Austrian rulers in the 19th century, is Venice's main pedestrian artery, running from near the station to the Rialto area. Away from this main drag, Cannaregio's back streets and canals, particularly the Fondamente della Misericordia, offer some of the most authentically Venetian streetscapes in the city, where washing hangs between buildings and children play campo football.

Cannaregio is also home to Venice's most poignant historical site: the Jewish Ghetto, the world's first area of compulsory Jewish residence, established in 1516 on the island of Ghetto Nuovo. The district's tallest buildings, five and six storeys, extraordinary for Venice, were built as a result of the ghetto's overcrowding.

Did you know? Cannaregio's Fondamente della Misericordia is considered the most authentically Venetian evening social scene, locals have aperitivo here for prices a fraction of those in Piazza San Marco.
