About Place Garibaldi
Nice's oldest grand square, all Italian-style ochre arcades, honouring native son Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian unification hero who bitterly opposed his home city ever becoming French in 1860.
Place Garibaldi is the oldest of Nice's grand squares, laid out at the end of the 18th century, when the city belonged to the Kingdom of Sardinia, as a monumental Turinese-style gateway of yellow-ochre arcaded buildings with trompe-l'oeil frescoes. At its centre stands a bronze statue (inaugurated 1891) of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the hero of Italian unification, who was born in Nice in 1807. The square carries a poignant irony: Garibaldi opposed the 1860 transfer of Nice from Sardinia to France and wished his home city to join the new Italy, so Nice's proudest monument honours a native son who never accepted its becoming French. Crossed today by the tram and ringed with cafés, the square captures the city's lasting in-between identity, French by treaty yet Italian in blood. It lies within the historic city of Nice.
Did you know? The square honours Giuseppe Garibaldi, hero of Italian unification, who was born in Nice in 1807, yet he bitterly opposed the city's 1860 handover to France and wanted it to join the new Italy instead.
