About Cathédrale Orthodoxe Russe Saint-Nicolas

A Russian cathedral of pink brick and onion domes, improbably risen in Nice, one of the most important Orthodox churches outside Russia, built where a Tsar's heir died in 1865.

The Saint-Nicolas Russian Orthodox Cathedral is one of the most important Russian Orthodox buildings ever raised outside Russia, built in the Russian Revival style between 1903 and 1912 and consecrated in December 1912. It stands in the former grounds of the Villa Bermond, where Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich, heir to the Russian throne, died in 1865; the cathedral was built in his memory, on land granted by Tsar Nicholas II and to designs by the architect Mikhail Preobrazhensky. Crowned with onion domes (its principal dome rising about 52 metres), it recalls the Russian aristocracy who once wintered in Nice. After a long ownership dispute, French courts confirmed in 2013 that it belongs to the Russian Federation. Classed a historic monument in 1987, it lies within the historic city of Nice.

Did you know? Before the Russian Revolution, Nice was a favourite winter retreat of the Russian aristocracy; the grand dukes and princes who wintered here built this cathedral, one of the most important Orthodox churches outside Russia.
