About Musée national Marc Chagall

A museum Chagall planned himself, built to hold his 'Biblical Message', seventeen glowing canvases of Genesis, Exodus and the Song of Songs, with his own blue stained glass in the concert hall.

The Marc Chagall National Museum, on a hillside below Cimiez in Nice, is a French national museum built to house Marc Chagall's 'Biblical Message', a cycle of seventeen large canvases on the books of Genesis and Exodus and the Song of Songs, which he painted between 1956 and 1966 and gave to the French State. Created in the artist's lifetime with the support of the culture minister André Malraux, and designed by the architect André Hermant, it was inaugurated in 1973 with Chagall present. Chagall shaped the museum closely: he set the placement of each work, guided the garden, and asked that a concert hall be included, for which he made blue stained-glass windows; he also designed a mosaic overlooking the pool. Set among gardens, it lies within Cimiez, above the historic city of Nice.

Did you know? Unlike most museums, this one holds a single artist's single gift: Chagall painted the seventeen 'Biblical Message' canvases over ten years, gave them to France, and then chose exactly where each one would hang.
