About MAMAC
Four white marble-clad towers holding one of France's best collections of playful post-war art, the New Realism born in Nice around Yves Klein, face to face with American Pop Art.
MAMAC, the Musée d'art moderne et d'art contemporain, opened in 1990 as Nice's museum of modern and contemporary art. Its striking building, by architects Yves Bayard and Henri Vidal, is a group of four square towers clad in white Carrara marble and linked by arches, straddling the covered Paillon river, with a rooftop terrace giving city views. The collection is renowned for European New Realism (Nouveau Réalisme), Yves Klein, who was born in Nice, along with Arman, César and Niki de Saint Phalle, and for American Pop Art (Warhol, Lichtenstein and others), the two great playful movements of the post-war age. Niki de Saint Phalle bequeathed about 170 works to the city in 2001. The museum stands on Place Yves Klein near Place Garibaldi, within the historic city of Nice.
Did you know? In the 1950s and 60s Nice was, surprisingly, a birthplace of modern art: the local artist Yves Klein and his friends launched 'New Realism', a French cousin of Pop Art, which swept everyday objects into the gallery.
