About Colline du Château
The city's green balcony between the old town and the port, with the classic view over the Bay of Angels, a castle-less 'Castle Hill', its fortress blown up by Louis XIV in 1706.
The Colline du Château (Castle Hill) is a limestone hill about 93 metres high between the old town and the port of Nice, now the city's best-loved park and viewpoint, giving the classic panorama over the Baie des Anges, the old-town roofs and the sea. Despite the name, no castle survives: the medieval citadel that stood here was captured by French forces and demolished in 1706 on the orders of Louis XIV, and the bare hill was later planted as a garden. The site is tied to Nice's ancient origins as the Greek settlement of Nikaia. An artificial waterfall (cascade), inaugurated in 1885 to mark a new mountain-water aqueduct, tumbles over the ruins; two cemeteries of 1783 lie at the north end. Access is free, by staircases or a public lift, and a cannon is fired daily at noon. It lies within the historic city of Nice.
Did you know? Despite its name, Castle Hill has no castle: the great fortress that once crowned it was blown up and levelled in 1706 on the orders of Louis XIV, so it could never again be held against France.
