Naples Cathedral, the Duomo di Napoli, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, stands on Via Duomo in the heart of the ancient city. Construction began under Charles I of Anjou in 1272 on the site of earlier Greek and Roman temples. The cathedral is renowned throughout Italy for the Miracle of San Gennaro: three times a year, the dried blood of Saint Januarius, Naples' patron saint, martyred in 305 AD, is said to liquefy in its silver reliquary. When the miracle occurs, the crowd gathered outside erupts in jubilation; when it does not, Neapolitans interpret it as an omen of disaster. The Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro, built in fulfilment of a vow made during the 1527 plague, houses the relics. Beneath the cathedral lies the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, one of the oldest Christian baptisteries in the world, decorated with 5th-century mosaics of extraordinary beauty.
