About Teatro San Carlo

The world's oldest continuously active opera house, inaugurated in 1737, predating La Scala by 41 years, renowned for its exceptional acoustics and sumptuous Bourbon interior.

The Teatro San Carlo was built in just nine months and inaugurated on 4 November 1737, the feast day of King Charles III of Bourbon, its patron, and the saint after whom it is named. At 1,386 seats arranged in six tiers of boxes and a parterre, it was the largest opera house in the world when it opened, and it predates Milan's La Scala by 41 years. The acoustics are considered among the finest of any opera house in the world, a fact attributed partly to the wooden construction of the interior and partly to the original design of the horseshoe-shaped auditorium. The theatre was largely destroyed by fire in 1816 and rebuilt within the extraordinary period of just ten months, re-opening to astonished audiences who found it still more beautiful than before. Today the San Carlo performs a full season from October to June, with opera, ballet, and concert programmes. The theatre's red and gold interior, its multiple tiers of boxes, and its painted ceiling are among the most beautiful in any opera house in the world.

Did you know? Teatro San Carlo predates Milan's famous La Scala by 41 years, making it the world's oldest continuously operating opera house since 1737.
