About Royal Palace of Naples

The magnificent 17th-century Bourbon palace facing Piazza del Plebiscito, home to lavish royal apartments, a historic library, and eight statues of Naples' dynasties in the facade niches.

The Royal Palace of Naples dominates one entire side of Piazza del Plebiscito, its long facade punctuated by eight statues of the kings who ruled Naples from Roger the Norman to Vittorio Emanuele II. Begun in 1600 by the architect Domenico Fontana under Spanish viceroy rule, the palace was repeatedly expanded and redecorated by the Bourbon kings who made it their primary residence after 1734. The grand state apartments on the piano nobile are among the finest surviving examples of 18th-century royal interiors in Europe: gilded throne rooms, painted ceilings, porcelain rooms, and suites of furniture and tapestries assembled from royal collections across the continent. The palace also houses the Biblioteca Nazionale, one of Italy's most important libraries, with over two million volumes including the precious Bourbon Library. The adjoining Teatro San Carlo, the world's oldest continuously operating opera house, was built by Charles III as part of the same royal complex. The palace courtyard gives access to the royal chapel and to the famous staircase of honour.

Did you know? The eight statues in the Royal Palace facade niches represent every dynasty that ruled Naples, from Roger the Norman in the 11th century to Vittorio Emanuele II in 1860.
