About Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino)

A commanding 13th-century Angevin fortress on the Naples waterfront, famous for its magnificent Renaissance triumphal arch and sweeping harbour views.

Castel Nuovo, "New Castle", was built by Charles I of Anjou in 1279 to serve as his royal residence and seat of power in Naples. Its five massive cylindrical towers and crenellated walls loomed over the harbour as an unmistakable statement of Angevin authority. The castle's most celebrated feature, however, is neither medieval: the stunning white marble Triumphal Arch of Alfonso, inserted between two of the towers, was commissioned by Alfonso V of Aragon to commemorate his triumphant entry into Naples in 1443. One of the finest examples of early Renaissance sculpture in Italy, the arch is carved with reliefs of Alfonso's cortège, allegorical figures, and classical motifs. Inside, the Civic Museum houses a collection of bronze doors, frescoes, sculptures, and important historical documents. The great hall known as the Barons' Hall was the scene of intrigue, banquets, and political drama through the centuries. The castle also offers remarkable views of the Bay of Naples and nearby Piazza del Plebiscito.

Did you know? The Triumphal Arch of Alfonso (begun 1453) is one of the first great works of Renaissance sculpture in southern Italy, the work of several masters including Francesco Laurana.
