About Spaccanapoli
The straight, ancient street that literally "splits Naples", a living spine of Neapolitan culture lined with baroque churches, pizza shops, and artisan workshops.
Spaccanapoli, literally "Split Naples", is the long, laser-straight street that cuts across the historic centre of Naples, following the exact line of the ancient Greek city of Neapolis. Walking its length is to walk through two and a half thousand years of uninterrupted urban life. The street changes name several times along its course, Via Benedetto Croce, Via San Biagio dei Librai, Via Vicaria Vecchia, but Neapolitans know it as one thing: the decumano inferiore, the lower main street of the ancient city grid. Along its length, at seemingly every other door, stands a Baroque church of extraordinary richness, a crumbling palazzo with an ornate courtyard, or a pizzeria breathing wood smoke into the afternoon air. Here you will find the Gesù Nuovo church with its faceted stonework facade, the Basilica of Santa Chiara with its famous majolica-tiled cloister, and an endless procession of the daily life of Naples at its most vivid and authentic.
Did you know? Spaccanapoli follows the exact line of the ancient Greek city of Neapolis, laid out over 2,500 years ago, the street grid has never changed.
