The western waterfront of Naples, stretching from the Santa Lucia waterfront past the elegant Chiaia neighbourhood to the small harbour of Mergellina, is the city's most refined face. The Via Francesco Caracciolo runs the length of this seafront, named after the Neapolitan admiral hanged by Admiral Nelson on the orders of the Bourbon court in 1799. The promenade is flanked by the beautiful Villa Comunale public park, created in 1780 as a royal garden for the Bourbon kings. Mergellina, at the western end, is the last surviving remnant of the original fishing village culture of Naples, with small restaurants serving freshly caught seafood, traditional pizza, and the city's famous fried food. The views along this seafront, Vesuvius across the bay, Castel dell'Ovo on its island, the hills of Posillipo rising beyond, are among the most memorable in Italy. In the evening, the passeggiata along the Via Caracciolo is a quintessential Neapolitan experience.
