About San Gregorio Armeno: Christmas Street
Naples' famous "Christmas Street", a lane in the historic centre lined year-round with artisan workshops selling handmade presepe nativity scenes, from traditional shepherds to custom celebrity figurines.
Via San Gregorio Armeno is the most festive street in Naples and one of the most famous in all of Italy, a narrow lane running off Spaccanapoli in the heart of the historic centre, lined on both sides with artisan workshops that sell handcrafted presepe (nativity scene) figures and accessories. The tradition of Neapolitan presepe-making dates to at least the 13th century but reached its zenith in the 18th century when aristocratic Neapolitan families competed to produce the most elaborate and spectacular nativity scenes, commissioning the finest craftsmen and spending extraordinary sums. Today the workshops on San Gregorio Armeno produce everything from traditional terracotta shepherds and angels to highly topical figurines of current politicians, footballers, and celebrities, always with a wry Neapolitan edge. The workshops operate year-round, and even in midsummer the street is jammed with visitors drawn by the extraordinary displays. The 16th-century convent of San Gregorio Armeno at the top of the street, with its baroque church and beautiful cloistered garden, is also well worth visiting.
Did you know? Neapolitan presepe workshops on Via San Gregorio Armeno produce topical figurines every year of current public figures, from the reigning Pope to the footballer of the moment, always with a sardonic Neapolitan twist.
