About Palazzo dello Spagnolo

An 18th-century noble palace in the Sanità district, famous for its extraordinary double helical external staircase, one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Naples.

The Palazzo dello Spagnolo is one of the great architectural surprises of Naples, a noble residence in the Sanità quarter whose modest street facade conceals one of the most spectacular staircases in Italian Baroque architecture. Built in 1738 for the nobleman Nicola Moscati, it was later acquired by a wealthy Spanish merchant, which explains its name. The architectural focus of the palace is its magnificent open-air double staircase, the Scala dello Spagnolo, which rises in two symmetrical flights of external stairs curving outward from the courtyard in a dramatic double-winged form. Architect Ferdinando Sanfelice, the master of the dramatic open staircase in Neapolitan palaces, is believed to have designed or strongly influenced this staircase. The effect, looking up at the courtyard from below or down from the upper landing, is one of theatrical spatial drama that has no equivalent in European architecture. The courtyard has been used as a film location for numerous Italian films and television productions.

Did you know? The staircase of Palazzo dello Spagnolo was designed in the style of architect Ferdinando Sanfelice, the master of the dramatic Neapolitan external staircase, a form found nowhere else in Italian architecture.
