About Catacombs of San Gennaro
Naples' extraordinary early Christian catacombs on the Capodimonte hill, vast underground burial galleries adorned with ancient frescoes, mosaics, and the tombs of Naples' earliest bishops and saints.
The Catacombs of San Gennaro are among the most important early Christian sites in the Mediterranean world, carved into the volcanic tuff of the Capodimonte hill in the second century AD. The catacombs extend over two levels, with the lower level representing the earliest Christian community in Naples, its tombs, galleries, and burial niches stretching for hundreds of metres in every direction. The upper level, developed in the 4th and 5th centuries, contains some of the finest early Christian frescoes in Italy, including a remarkable portrait of San Gennaro himself believed to date from around 400 AD, one of the earliest surviving representations of the saint. The body of Saint Januarius was once kept here before being moved to the cathedral. Guided tours led by social cooperative workers from the surrounding Rione Sanità neighbourhood provide an extraordinary experience of this layered, luminous, and deeply moving sacred space.
Did you know? The Catacombs of San Gennaro contain what is believed to be the oldest surviving portrait of San Gennaro, painted around 400 AD, just a century after the saint's martyrdom.
