About Bock Casemates
A UNESCO-listed network of underground rock-hewn galleries and fortifications beneath the Bock promontory, 23 km of tunnels carved into Luxembourg's sandstone cliffs over 300 years.
The Bock Casemates are the most dramatic and historically significant fortifications in Luxembourg City. Carved into the sandstone rock of the Bock promontory beginning in 1644, under Spanish rule, and expanded over the following three centuries under successive Austrian, French, and Prussian administrators, the casemates eventually comprised 23 kilometres of underground tunnels and galleries. These passages housed soldiers, workshops, slaughterhouses, bakeries, and munitions stores, an entire subterranean city capable of sheltering up to 35,000 soldiers and civilians. During the Second World War the casemates sheltered up to 35,000 people from bombing raids. Part of the casemates network is open to visitors and forms one of Luxembourg's most popular tourist attractions, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Luxembourg Old Town and Fortifications designation.
