About Notre-Dame Cathedral

Luxembourg's national cathedral, a 17th-century Jesuit church with Gothic and Renaissance elements, housing a venerated statue of Our Lady of Luxembourg and the ducal burial vault.

Notre-Dame Cathedral is the most important religious building in Luxembourg and the national cathedral of the grand duchy. The church was built by Jesuits between 1613 and 1621, originally as a school chapel, in a transitional style that combines late Gothic vaulting with Renaissance decorative elements, a combination typical of early 17th-century Jesuit architecture in the Habsburg territories. The cathedral is particularly venerated for its statue of Our Lady of Luxembourg, a 17th-century image housed in the south aisle that is the object of great popular devotion and the centre of an annual octave procession drawing tens of thousands of pilgrims. The cathedral also contains the Crypt of the Counts of Luxembourg and the Grand Ducal burial vault, making it the national pantheon of the country. The building was elevated to cathedral status in 1870 when the diocese of Luxembourg was created.
