About Grund (Lower City)
Luxembourg's picturesque lower city in the Alzette valley, historic stone houses, the ancient Abbey of Neumünster, riverside gardens, and the most romantic neighbourhood in the capital.
The Grund is Luxembourg City's lower town, situated in the valley of the Alzette river at the foot of the sandstone cliffs on which the upper city stands. The neighbourhood's stone houses, mostly dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, cluster along the narrow streets between the river and the cliff face, overlooked by the fortification walls of the upper city above. The neighbourhood centres on the Neumünster Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery founded in 1606 (its monastic community tracing back to the 11th-century Altmünster abbey), whose buildings now serve as a cultural centre and exhibition space. The Grund is connected to the upper city by a series of steep staircases and the historic bridges that cross the Alzette. In recent decades the neighbourhood has become home to restaurants, cafés, and art galleries, while retaining its authentic historic character. At night, when the upper city walls are illuminated, the Grund becomes one of the most atmospherically beautiful urban spaces in Luxembourg.
Did you know? The Grund sits 50-60 metres below the upper city, connected by staircases carved into the cliff, the dramatic vertical difference gives Luxembourg City its unique split-level character.
