The building dates from 1572, when it was constructed as the Town Hall of Luxembourg City; it has served as the ducal and later grand ducal palace since 1890. The building's facade is a striking example of late 16th-century Flemish Renaissance architecture mixed with Moorish decorative elements, an unusual combination reflecting the Spanish Habsburg influence in Luxembourg at the time of its construction. The palace stands in the heart of the old town, adjacent to the Place Guillaume II (the main market square) and the Chamber of Deputies. During the summer, when the royal family is at their country residence, the palace is open for guided tours that cover the state apartments, throne room, and impressive collection of European and Luxembourgish art.
