About Hamburger Kunsthalle
One of Germany's largest art museums, spanning old masters to contemporary, and home to Caspar David Friedrich's 'Wanderer above the Sea of Fog'.
The Hamburger Kunsthalle is one of the largest and most important art museums in Germany, spanning three interconnected buildings from different eras on the edge of the city centre. The collection ranges from medieval altarpieces to cutting-edge contemporary art, taking in old masters, German Romanticism, 19th-century realism, Impressionism, Expressionism, and modern and contemporary works. The undisputed star of the collection is Caspar David Friedrich's 'Wanderer above the Sea of Fog' (1818), one of the most reproduced images in the history of German art, depicting a lone figure standing on a rocky outcrop gazing into a fog-shrouded landscape. Other highlights include works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Manet, Monet, Liebermann, and Kokoschka. The Galerie der Gegenwart (Gallery of the Present), added in 1997, houses an extensive contemporary collection with major works by Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke, and international artists.
