About Deichstrasse
Hamburg's oldest preserved street, lined with 17th-century merchant houses on a canal, the fire that devastated the city in 1842 was finally stopped here.
Deichstrasse, 'dyke street', is one of Hamburg's most historically evocative streets, a row of tall, narrow merchant houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries that back directly onto the Nikolaifleet canal in the heart of the old city. These half-timbered and brick facades represent some of the oldest surviving domestic and commercial architecture in Hamburg. The street owes its survival to the Great Fire of Hamburg in May 1842, which swept through much of the old city for three days and nights, destroying around 1,700 buildings and over 4,000 homes. The fire was eventually stopped here at the Deichstrasse, where it met the canal, the water forming a natural firebreak. Today the street is a popular restaurant district, with outdoor tables backing directly onto the canal in summer, while the architecture and atmosphere evoke the Hamburg of medieval merchants and Hanseatic traders.
