Blankenese, on the western fringes of Hamburg about 15 kilometres from the city centre, is one of the most charming residential areas in all of northern Germany. Formerly an independent fishing village, it is built on a series of steep hills above the Elbe, with a labyrinth of narrow paths, staircases, and alleyways threading between old half-timbered and whitewashed houses. At the base of the hill is the Elbe beach, a wide sandy strand where Hamburgers swim, picnic, and watch enormous container ships pass at close range. The contrast between the village-like intimacy of the hillside and the industrial scale of the shipping lanes below is one of Blankenese's defining charms. The HADAG ferry connects Blankenese directly to the Landungsbrücken in central Hamburg, making it easily accessible without a car. The villa quarter of Blankenese, with its grand 19th and early 20th-century residences, is among the most exclusive addresses in Germany.
