Hauptkirche Sankt Michaelis, universally known as the 'Michel', is Hamburg's most iconic church and one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in northern Germany. The current building was completed in 1762 after earlier versions were destroyed by fire in 1750. The 132-metre copper-clad tower, its green verdigris visible from far across the city and the harbour, has served as a navigational landmark for approaching ships for centuries. The tower's clock faces measure 8 metres in diameter, the largest in Germany. Inside, the whitewashed Baroque interior seats 2,500 and features stunning stucco work and a large pipe organ above the entrance. The crypt beneath contains over 2,400 burial niches and the tombs of notable Hamburgers. An elevator and stairway ascend the tower to a viewing platform with sweeping harbour panoramas. Composers Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Johann Mattheson are buried here.
