About Alster Lakes

Hamburg's twin inner-city lakes, the Binnenalster and Aussenalster, created by damming the Alster river, beloved for sailing, rowing, swans, and winter ice skating.

The Alster Lakes are Hamburg's green-blue heart, two interconnected artificial lakes formed by damming the Alster river in the 13th century. The smaller Binnenalster (Inner Alster) sits in the very centre of the city, framed by elegant 19th-century commercial buildings; the much larger Aussenalster (Outer Alster) extends northward, covering 164 hectares and surrounded by parks, villas, and sailing clubs. Together they give Hamburg a rare quality among major European cities, the sense of light, water, and open sky right in the urban centre. In summer, dozens of sailing boats, rowing clubs, and water taxis animate the Aussenalster. Resident swans are something of an emblem of the city. In cold winters, when the Alster freezes over, Hamburgers flock to the ice in a tradition that has been celebrated for centuries. The Alsterpavillon on the Jungfernstieg provides a classic waterside cafe setting.

Did you know? Hamburg's official 'Swan Father' (Schwanenvater) is responsible for the welfare of the Alster's resident swans, herding them to a winter shelter each autumn.
