About Planten un Blomen
Hamburg's beloved inner-city park, 'Plants and Flowers' in Low German, featuring a Japanese garden, tropical greenhouses, rose gardens, and magical summer water-light concerts.
Planten un Blomen, 'Plants and Flowers' in the Low German dialect, is Hamburg's most loved inner-city park, covering 47 hectares between the city centre and the Außenalster. Established in its current form for the 1953 International Garden Exhibition, the park is home to one of the finest Japanese gardens in Europe, designed with advice from the city of Osaka, Hamburg's Japanese partner city. Tropical greenhouses host subtropical and equatorial plant collections year-round. The park's rose garden, with over 1,800 varieties, blooms magnificently in June and July. The centrepiece attraction from May to September is the evening Wasserlichtkonzert, water-light-music concert, where coloured fountains are choreographed to classical music and pop after dark, drawing crowds of Hamburgers for a quintessentially summer evening experience. Children's play areas, an ice rink in winter, and extensive green lawns for picnicking make it a year-round city park for all ages.
Did you know? The Japanese Garden in Planten un Blomen was designed with assistance from landscape architects from Osaka, Hamburg's twin city in Japan.
