Day 1

Day 1 covers 7 stops over about 2.2 km as the crow flies, from Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers of 1970 to Neptune's Fountain. ≈ 2.2 km between stops, straight line

Morning

  1. Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers of 1970: Three 42-metre steel crosses by the shipyard gate, raised in 1980 to the workers shot dead in the December 1970 protests, the first monument to the victims of communist repression in a communist state. 0.1 km to the next stop
  2. European Solidarity Centre: A rust-clad museum on the old shipyard, shaped like a ship's hull, telling how a 1980 strike gave birth to Solidarity, the free trade union that helped bring down communism across Europe. 0.9 km to the next stop
  3. Museum of the Second World War: Gdańsk's vast, sombre museum of the war that began here, its leaning glass tower above a huge underground exhibition that tells the conflict through the experience of ordinary civilians. 0.6 km to the next stop
  4. The Crane: Gdańsk's icon: a mid-15th-century port crane on the Motława, both a fortified water gate and a working crane, its huge wooden treadwheels once turned by men walking inside them. 0.2 km to the next stop

Afternoon

  1. Mariacka Street: Gdańsk's loveliest lane: a short cobbled run between St Mary's and the river, lined with raised stone terraces, gargoyle rain-spouts and a glowing parade of Baltic amber shops. 0.2 km to the next stop
  2. Green Gate: A palatial Flemish-Mannerist gate of the 1560s closing the Long Market at the river, built as a royal lodging no king ever used, and now home to a museum and Lech Wałęsa's office. 0.2 km to the next stop
  3. Neptune's Fountain: Gdańsk's bronze emblem: a 1633 sea-god fountain before Artus Court, cast by Gerdt Benning to Abraham van den Blocke's design, ringed by gilded Polish eagles and steeped in local legend.

  2. Artus Court: The grandest of northern Europe's merchant halls named for King Arthur: a soaring vaulted chamber on the Long Market, hung with model ships and holding an 11-metre Renaissance tiled stove. 0.1 km to the next stop
  3. St. Mary's Church: A colossal Brick Gothic co-cathedral, among the largest brick churches on earth, holding a medieval astronomical clock and a 78-metre tower climbed by some 405 steps for Gdańsk's best view. 0.4 km to the next stop

Afternoon

  1. Long Market: Gdańsk's grand pedestrian showpiece: a 300-metre parade of tall, gabled merchant houses along the old Royal Route from the Golden Gate to the river, rebuilt after the war. 0 km to the next stop

Distances are straight-line between stops; streets add a little.
