About Oliwa Cathedral

A long Brick Gothic archcathedral north of the centre, founded as a Cistercian abbey in 1186, famous for a Rococo organ of some 5,100 pipes whose carved angels move as it plays.

Oliwa Cathedral (Archikatedra Oliwska), in the northern Oliwa district of Gdańsk, is a Brick Gothic minor basilica and archcathedral dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It began as a Cistercian monastery founded in 1186 by the Pomeranian duke Sambor I. About 107 metres long, it is said to be the longest Cistercian church in the world. Pope John Paul II raised it to the rank of archcathedral on 25 March 1992.

It is famous for its Rococo pipe organ, built by the Cistercian monk Johann Wilhelm Wulff (Brother Michael) between 1763 and 1788. The original instrument had 83 registers and about 5,100 pipes, then reputedly the largest organ in Europe; after 20th-century rebuilding it has 96 registers and 5 manuals. Its carved front features moveable angels holding trumpets, bells, stars and suns. The Peace of Oliva, ending the Second Northern War, was signed in the monastery on 3 May 1660.

Did you know? The Oliwa organ, finished in 1788 by the monk Brother Michael, was once reckoned the largest in Europe and probably the world, with about 5,100 pipes. Its carved angels raise trumpets and ring bells as it plays.
