About Golden Gate
An elegant Mannerist archway of 1612–1614 opening the Royal Route, crowned by eight allegorical statues of the virtues a proud merchant city wished for itself, from Peace to Prudence.
The Golden Gate (Złota Brama) stands at the western end of Ulica Długa, marking the start of the Royal Route through the Main Town. It was built in 1612–1614 to a design by Abraham van den Blocke and constructed by Jan Strakowski, in the Dutch (Flemish) Mannerist style. It replaced an earlier Gothic gate, the Long Street Gate, that had stood on the site since the 13th or 14th century.
The gate is crowned by eight allegorical statues, designed in 1648 by Jeremias Falck. The four on the city side represent Peace, Freedom, Wealth and Fame; the four on the outer side represent Concord, Justice, Piety and Prudence. It adjoins the older Upland Gate and Prison Tower. Damaged by shelling in the Second World War, the gate was repaired in 1957.
Did you know? The gate's eight rooftop statues form a civic sermon: the city side shows Peace, Freedom, Wealth and Fame, while the outer side, facing the world, shows Concord, Justice, Piety and Prudence.
