About Long Market
Gdańsk's grand pedestrian showpiece: a 300-metre parade of tall, gabled merchant houses along the old Royal Route from the Golden Gate to the river, rebuilt after the war.
The Long Market (Długi Targ) and the adjoining Long Lane (Ulica Długa) form the Royal Route, a roughly 300-metre pedestrian axis running from the Golden Gate to the Green Gate on the Motława. A merchant road developed here from about the 13th century; the street is recorded in Latin as Longa Platea in 1331 and as Ulica Długa from 1552. It is lined with tall, gabled burgher houses, most reconstructed after wartime destruction.
Its landmarks include the Golden House (1609–1618) by Abraham van den Blocke, Artus Court, Uphagen's House at Długa 12 (1776) and Neptune's Fountain, around which a fence with gilded Polish eagles was added in 1634. By tradition Polish kings processed along the route on state visits, though the specific ceremonies are poorly documented. Długa and Długi Targ were designated a Historic Monument of Poland on 8 September 1994.
Did you know? The street's houses were narrow and tall by design: frontage onto the Long Market was taxed, so wealthy merchants competed for status by building upward and lavishing money on ornate, gilded gables rather than width.
