About Main Town Hall
Gdańsk's Gothic civic hall, its 83-metre tower crowned by a gilded king. Inside, the lavish Red Room ceiling glorifies the city in 25 paintings, now the Museum of Gdańsk.
The Main Town Hall (Ratusz Głównego Miasta) is a Gothic and Renaissance civic building on the Long Market, now home to the Museum of Gdańsk. Its oldest parts date to about 1327–1336, with a major expansion completed in 1382. The 83.45-metre tower, built in 1486–1488, makes it the second-tallest building in the Main Town after St Mary's; a gilded statuette of King Sigismund II Augustus was placed on the spire in 1561.
Its finest interior is the Red Room, the great council chamber, decorated in Dutch Mannerist style to designs by Hans Vredeman de Vries (1593–1596). Its ceiling holds 25 paintings by Isaac van den Blocke, completed in 1608, centred on 'The Apotheosis of Gdańsk'. Heavily damaged in 1945, the hall was largely rebuilt by 1952 and reopened as the city history museum in 1970.
Did you know? The tower's crowning gilded figure is King Sigismund II Augustus, set there in 1561. At 83 metres the hall is the second-tallest building in the old Main Town, outdone only by St Mary's Church.
