About Christ Church Cathedral
Dublin's oldest medieval building, with Viking origins dating to 1030, housing the tomb of Strongbow and a remarkable 12th-century crypt.
Christ Church Cathedral claims the oldest origins of any church in Dublin, tracing its foundation to around 1030 when Dúnán, the first Bishop of Dublin, built a wooden church on this limestone ridge above the River Liffey, in the heart of Viking Dublin. In 1172, the Anglo-Norman lord Richard de Clare, known as Strongbow, rebuilt the cathedral in stone. His tomb, or at least a medieval effigy believed to represent him, still lies within the cathedral today.
The cathedral underwent a drastic Victorian restoration in the 1870s, funded by distiller Henry Roe. This work stabilised the building but also changed much of its medieval character. The atmospheric 12th-century crypt, the oldest surviving structure in Dublin, stretches the full length of the nave above and is today open to visitors, containing stocks, a whipping post, and the famous mummified cat and rat found trapped in an organ pipe.
A covered stone bridge connecting the cathedral to the nearby Synod Hall, now Dublinia, is one of the most photographed views in Dublin's medieval quarter.
Did you know? A mummified cat and rat were found trapped inside an organ pipe during restoration in the 1860s and inspired a verse in James Joyce's Finnegans Wake.
