About Temple Bar

Dublin's lively cultural quarter with cobbled streets, colourful pubs, street artists, and a thriving arts scene between the Liffey and Dame Street.

Temple Bar is Dublin's cultural quarter, a compact area of cobbled lanes, independent galleries, boutique shops, and some of the city's most characterful pubs and restaurants. Bounded by the River Liffey to the north, Dame Street to the south, and running between Parliament Street and Westmoreland Street, the neighbourhood takes its name from Sir William Temple, a provost of Trinity College who owned property here in the 17th century.

The area was slated for demolition in the 1980s to make way for a bus station, but the plans were shelved and Temple Bar was instead redeveloped as a cultural district. Today it is home to the Irish Film Institute, the Gallery of Photography, the National Photographic Archive, the Project Arts Centre, and numerous independent theatres and performance spaces.

On weekend nights Temple Bar pulses with energy, its narrow streets packed with visitors from around the world enjoying traditional Irish music in pubs that have been pouring pints since the 19th century. The cobbled Meeting House Square hosts outdoor film screenings and weekend markets.

Did you know? Temple Bar was saved from demolition in the 1980s when plans for a bus station were shelved, artists who had moved into the cheap empty buildings transformed it into a cultural district instead.
