About Kilmainham Gaol

Ireland's most significant monument to the struggle for independence, where the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were executed.

Kilmainham Gaol was built in 1796 as a model prison for County Dublin, replacing an older and more decrepit facility. For 128 years it held some of Ireland's most famous political prisoners, including leaders of every major uprising from the 1798 rebellion through to the 1916 Easter Rising and the subsequent War of Independence. The prison closed in 1924 after the Irish Civil War, its last prisoner being Éamon de Valera, later President of Ireland.

The defining event in the prison's history came in May 1916, when 14 leaders of the Easter Rising were executed in the stone-breakers' yard by firing squad. Among them was James Connolly, so badly wounded in the fighting that he could not stand, he was tied to a chair to be shot. These executions transformed public opinion in Ireland almost overnight and are widely seen as the act that made Irish independence inevitable.

The prison was restored by volunteers in the 1960s and today offers one of the most haunting and emotionally powerful museum experiences in Ireland.

Did you know? James Connolly was so severely wounded in the Easter Rising that he was carried to the execution yard on a stretcher and tied to a chair to be shot by firing squad.
