About Phoenix Park

One of the largest enclosed city parks in Europe at 1,752 acres, home to wild fallow deer, the Irish President's residence, Dublin Zoo, and the US Ambassador's home.

Phoenix Park is one of the largest enclosed recreational spaces of any European capital city, stretching 1,752 acres across the western edge of Dublin. Established as a royal deer park by the Duke of Ormond in 1662, it was opened to the public in 1745 and has been freely accessible ever since. The park is home to a herd of over 500 wild fallow deer, descendants of the original animals brought here in the 17th century.

Within the park's boundaries stands Áras an Uachtaráin, the official residence of the President of Ireland, a Palladian mansion set in its own landscaped grounds, visible from the main road through the park. The US Ambassador's residence, which hosted visits by both John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama, occupies another historic house within the park.

Dublin Zoo, one of the oldest zoos in the world founded in 1830, occupies a 28-acre section of the park. The Phoenix Monument, erected in 1745, marks the park's centre. The Papal Cross marks the site where Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass before 1.25 million people in 1979, the largest gathering in Irish history.

Did you know? Phoenix Park's name comes from the Irish 'Fionn Uisce' meaning 'clear water', not from the mythological bird, English administrators simply misheard the Irish words.
