About Puente Romano

The ancient Roman bridge over the Guadalquivir, 16 arches built in the 1st century BC, repeatedly rebuilt and repaired, flanked by the Torre de la Calahorra and offering the finest view of the Mezquita's tower rising over the river.

The Puente Romano, Roman Bridge, crosses the Guadalquivir River at the southern edge of Córdoba's historic centre, linking the old city to the Torre de la Calahorra on the south bank. The bridge was originally built in the 1st century BC by the Romans, though it has been so extensively rebuilt over the centuries, by the Moors, in the medieval period, and in modern restorations, that very little of the original Roman structure survives. The bridge is approximately 250 metres long with 16 arches, and it offers one of the most beautiful views in Córdoba: looking back towards the old city with the Mezquita's converted minaret-tower rising above the rooftops. At the bridge's centre stands a 17th-century statue of the Archangel Raphael, patron saint of Córdoba.

Did you know? The Guadalquivir River, whose name comes from the Arabic al-Wadi al-Kabir, meaning Great River, was navigable from the sea to Córdoba in Roman and medieval times, making Córdoba effectively a port city. Roman river boats carrying olive oil, wine, and grain would have passed beneath the bridge's arches regularly.
