About Palacio de Viana

A magnificent 15th-century aristocratic palace containing twelve beautiful courtyards, one of the finest examples of Andalusian courtyard architecture, with a remarkable decorative arts collection and one of the most beautiful rose gardens in Spain.

The Palacio de Viana is a large aristocratic mansion in the historic centre of Córdoba, built in the 15th century and progressively expanded over the following three centuries. It remained in the hands of the Marqueses de Viana until 1980, when it was acquired by a savings bank and opened to the public. The palace is famous above all for its twelve interconnected patios, courtyard gardens of different sizes and characters, planted with roses, orange trees, jasmine, and geraniums, and decorated with fountains, azulejo tiles, and climbing plants. The palace also houses a rich collection of decorative arts: tapestries, leather hangings, porcelain, weapons, and paintings accumulated by the aristocratic family over five centuries.

Did you know? The leather goods produced in Córdoba, the 'cordobanes', were the most prized leather products in Europe during the medieval period. The technique of tooling, dyeing, and gilding Moroccan goatskin developed in Córdoba gives us the English word 'cordovan', still used today to describe a particular type of high-quality horse leather.
