About Calleja de las Flores
The most photographed alley in Córdoba, a narrow street of whitewashed walls hung with flower pots, framing a perfect view of the Mezquita's bell tower at the end of the lane, that captures the essence of the city's flower-and-whitewash aesthetic.
The Calleja de las Flores, Lane of Flowers, is the most famous street in Córdoba's historic centre, a narrow whitewashed alley in the Judería whose walls are hung with pots of red and pink geraniums, and which frames at its northern end a view of the Mezquita's bell tower rising above the rooftops. The lane is short, barely 50 metres long, but the combination of the white walls, the cascading flowers, and the framed view of the Mezquita tower makes it one of the most photogenic spots in Andalusia. It is always crowded with visitors, particularly in spring and summer when the flowers are at their most abundant. Come very early in the morning for the best experience.
Did you know? The tradition of hanging flower pots on exterior walls in Córdoba is not primarily decorative but has functional origins: the pots were hung on south-facing walls to shade the wall and reduce heat transmission into the interior of the house, while the moisture from the watered plants also cooled the air around the wall slightly.
