About Plaza de la Corredera
Córdoba's only enclosed baroque square, a rectangular plaza built between 1683 and 1687 with colonnaded arcades on all four sides, once used for bullfights and public executions, now surrounded by cafés and restaurants, and host to a lively Sunday flea market.
The Plaza de la Corredera is Córdoba's only enclosed baroque square, a large rectangular space built in 1683-1687 in a style heavily influenced by Madrid's Plaza Mayor. It is surrounded on all four sides by colonnaded arcades with three-storey buildings above, creating a unified architectural composition. The square has served many purposes: public festivals, bullfights, executions, and markets. Today the ground floor arcades are occupied by cafés and restaurants, and the square hosts a flea market every Sunday and Thursday morning. It is one of the most pleasant places in Córdoba to sit for morning coffee, particularly in the spring and autumn.
Did you know? Excavations in the 1990s showed that the rectangular shape of the Plaza de la Corredera precisely follows the outline of the Roman chariot-racing circus that once occupied the same ground, the square preserves the footprint of the vanished track. The Roman circus, one of the largest in the Empire, was approximately 350 metres long and 70 metres wide.
