The supreme achievement of Western Islamic architecture, a vast mosque begun in 784 AD and expanded over three centuries to contain nearly 900 columns, into whose heart a Gothic cathedral was inserted in the 16th century, creating one of the most extraordinary buildings in the world.
The Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba is one of the greatest buildings in the world: a massive mosque begun by Abd al-Rahman I in 784 on the site of a Visigothic church, expanded four times over nearly three centuries to reach its current dimensions, and famous above all for the forest of double arches, striped in red brick and white stone, that fills the prayer hall. In the 16th century, a full cathedral was inserted into the centre of the mosque by royal decree, creating a unique building that contains two completely different architectural traditions within a single structure. The building covers 23,400 square metres and is one of the best-preserved great mosques in the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Byzantine mosaics of the Mezquita's Mihrab were made by craftsmen sent from Constantinople by the Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas, in response to a diplomatic gift from the Caliph Al-Hakam II.
