About Riomaggiore

The southernmost Cinque Terre village, Riomaggiore tumbles steeply down a narrow valley to a rocky harbour, its tall colourful houses stacked like a vertical city above the sea, medieval in origin and intensely Ligurian in character.

Riomaggiore is the southernmost of the five Cinque Terre villages, first documented in records from 1251, with its name derived from Rio Maggiore, the Great Stream, the watercourse that carved the narrow valley down which the village descends to the sea. The Via Colombo, the main street, runs steeply down from the railway station to the harbour, lined with tall, densely packed houses in terracotta, ochre, and deep yellow, their facades rising four and five storeys high. There is no beach, the foreshore is entirely rocky, with fishing boats stored on concrete ramps and hauled in and out of the water by winches. Swimming is done from the rocks. Rock diving into the clear Ligurian water from the harbour walls is a local tradition. The village is the southern terminus of the Via dell'Amore, the famous clifftop path to Manarola, and its proximity to La Spezia makes it the most accessible of the five villages by rail.

Did you know? Riomaggiore's first documentary record dates to 1251, when its inhabitants swore loyalty to the Republic of Genoa, the narrow valley it occupies was carved by the Rio Maggiore stream, which now runs invisibly beneath the paved main street.
