About Castello Doria, Vernazza
The 15th-century cylindrical watchtower built by the powerful Doria family on Vernazza's rocky headland offers what many regard as the finest panoramic view in the entire Cinque Terre, looking south along the coast over all five villages.
The Castello Doria, also known as the Belforte, is a cylindrical stone watchtower built in the 15th century on the rocky headland above Vernazza's harbour by the Doria family, the most powerful noble clan of Genoa, who held dominion over much of the Ligurian coast during the medieval and early modern period. The tower was built as a military fortification and watchtower, designed to give advance warning of the Saracen pirate raids that periodically devastated this coastline. The circular plan, unusual in defensive architecture, allowed defenders to watch in all directions simultaneously. From the top of the tower, the view is the most spectacular in the Cinque Terre: south along the coast, the rooftops of Vernazza below, Corniglia visible on its distant promontory, Manarola's rock shelf in the further distance. On very clear days, Riomaggiore can be seen as well. The castle contains a small museum and the climb to the top, while steep, is manageable for most visitors.
