About Via dell'Amore

The 'Path of Love', a dramatic clifftop walkway of roughly 900 metres carved into the rock between Riomaggiore and Manarola, was built by railway workers in 1926 and became famous worldwide for its romantic sea views and tradition of lovers' padlocks.

The Via dell'Amore is a coastal path of roughly 900 metres hewn directly from the cliff face between Riomaggiore and Manarola, built in 1926 during the construction of the La Spezia-Genova railway as an access route for maintenance workers. The workers who built it, coming from both villages, found it the ideal rendezvous for romantic meetings, which is how it acquired its name. The path runs entirely at cliff height, almost entirely flat, with the sheer rock wall on one side and the Ligurian Sea dropping steeply away below. It offers continuous, dramatic sea views for its entire length and was for decades the most popular short walk in the Cinque Terre. In April 2012, a major rockfall caused the closure of most of the path, which remained partially inaccessible for over a decade while stabilisation and restoration works were carried out. The path was progressively reopened and fully reopened in 2024, making it once again completely walkable. The tradition of attaching padlocks to the railings, symbolising eternal love, has been a feature of the Via dell'Amore since the 1980s.

Did you know? The Via dell'Amore was built in 1926 as a maintenance path for railway workers, its romantic fame came entirely from young men using it as the easiest way to visit sweethearts in the neighbouring village, transforming a piece of industrial infrastructure into one of Italy's most romantic walks.
